DO NOT CLOSE A DOOR THAT YOU ARE UNABLE TO OPEN. -Imam Ali (a.s)
The exact Arabic wording appears in Ghurar al-Hikam wa Durar al-Kalim as: «لا تغلق بابًا يعجزك افتتاحه.» — literally “Do not close a door that you are unable to open.”
Ghurar al-Hikam (غرر الحكم و درر الكلم) is a large medieval collection of aphorisms compiled by ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Amīdī (al-Tamīmī) (d. 510 AH / 1116 CE). The book gathers many short sayings attributed to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib and other sources; the compiler arranged thousands of brief aphorisms.
